Training
Training is either on an individual basis or in small groups.
Training can be achieved in competitive obedience, agility including competitions, flyball and cani-cross (running with your dog), all of which are great fun for owner and dog. Any method of playtime together will help to formulate the close bond that we all want with our dogs.
In order for this bond to develop you need to put in the time. It's like any relationship, it has to be worked on. Training can bridge the gaps in your knowledge and help to show you what your dog needs from you so he can be a great dog!
When a rescue dog comes into your home, there can be initial difficulties as the dog struggles to settle in with you and your family. This is completely normal, especially as we often don't know exactly what his background has been. Gentle training will aid in the achievement of harmony in the home and help the dog to focus on you and develop the bond that you both need to start your relationship together. A dog needs a consistent approach from you and an attitude of firm patience as he finds his way within your family.
The use of interactive play methods helps to keep your dog motivated to be/stay with you. Often bad behaviour is simply a result of miscommunication. When you learn to understand why your dog is behaving as he does and how your behaviour may be exaggerating that behaviour, you can learn how to change your actions. This simple act can dramatically improve your relationship with your dog and lead the way forward to a happy, obedient and responsible member of your family.
Working with the whole family achieves better results making everyone in the home consistent in their training methodology.
Does your dog:
- Sit or lie down' when you ask?
- Come back in the park when you call?
- Walk nicely on the lead?
- Focus on you during a walk and ignore distractions?
- Not Jump on you and/or your guests?
- Relax and be calm and quiet in the car?
- Never growl at strangers or friends when they call or approach your car?
- Never chase the neighbours cat / squirrels / deer / cars / bicycle / joggers?
- Sit or lie on his own bed - not yours!
- Love the postman?
- Likes other dogs and interacts with them well, without being over the top?
- Let you take away his food if you need to?
- Get on well with your other dog/animals in the house?
- Respond to every member of your family with a willing attitude?
- Always easy to control?
- Know that his toilet area is outside?
- Interact quietly with your guests, but return to his bed when you ask him to?
- Relax and sleep most of the time at home, and not seek your constant attention?
- Have no separation anxiety when you have to leave him?
- Sleep well during the night without disturbing you?
If you answered 'NO' to any of the above questions, you would benefit from some outside help. There is no need to live with an unruly or disobedient dog. There are solutions to every problem and working through these solutions can create a more harmonious life with your dog.
The dog is man's best friend:
- To guide us
- To hear for us
- To rescue us
- To work for us
- He is our companion
Let us give back that which he has given us - love, peace, healing and happiness.
